SANTOVENA RODRIGUEZ, Marianela. The impossible ethics of J. M. Coetzee. Acta poét [online]. 2009, vol.30, n.2, pp.215-231. ISSN 2448-735X.

Ethics assumes the social sphere as a fact, and pursues a social order in which the means or the ends may be summarized under the ideas of justice, freedom, love, creation, etc. Nonetheless, in Life and Times of Michael K, South African writer J.M. Coetzee poses an ethic meditation both bold and paradoxical insofar as it is based on isolation and the lack of any category that resembles that of the Western subject. It is not an ethics of lightness, but rather an ethics of loss, of deliberate destitution. This ethics is not about the Good or the Kingdom of Heaven, nor about justice; but rather about encountering singularity and not being tempted to overpower it.

Palavras-chave : Coetzee; ethics; singularity.
