Abstract

Background:
The Carotid Body Tumor is usually a benign neoplasm, but with malignant potential.
Objective:
To describe the experience in the treatment of these neoplasms in a second level hospital in the metropolitan area of Querétaro, Mexico.
Methods:
Retrospective study of the experience at Hospital General Regional 2, el Marqués. Review of four cases of carotid body tumors reported during a 3 years and 2 months period in our institution. Patient´s presentation, surgical approach and resection, clinical outcome and follow-up were the analyzed variables.
Results:
Four cases presented, all female patients with a mean age of 52 years, range from 36 to 64, the most frequent type was Shamblin III. All tumors were successfully resected, the most serious complication was transoperative bradycardia that occurred in one case, the remainders without complications. The four patients had favorable outcome during the follow up.
Conclusion:
The Surgical resection of Carotid Body Tumors can be carried out safely and effectively with low morbidity and mortality at the second level.
