Abstract

CANO CONTRERAS, Eréndira Juanita  and  SALAZAR GUARAN, Gloria Francisca. Cholq’ij Mayan Calendar and Kaqchikel Mayan Medicine. Cuicuilco. Rev. cienc. antropol. [online]. 2022, vol.29, n.84, pp.231-254.  Epub Feb 10, 2023. ISSN 2448-8488.

This paper describes the main characteristics of the Cholq’ij —the 260-day sacred calendar that has persisted in the Mayan highlands of Guatemala— in relation to the therapeutic, ritual and symbolic elements of the Kaqchikel Mayan Medicine. We described the way in what the Mayan healers and shamans construct the diagnosis and treatment, either the way that they help to health maintenance. In that description, we emphasized the worldview and calendrical aspects that are underlie these practices. From a joint systematization exercise and in an inter epistemic dialogue, we tried to reflect the interests of ethnomedical specialists and write only the information that has been duly discerned and agreed upon. We analysed the procedures, practices and knowledge of Kaqchikel Maya Medicine that are based on the use, management and knowledge of the Cholq’ij calendar, as well as its relationship and reflection with the constitutive aspects of the Kaqchikel Maya Worldview.

Keywords : Ethnomedicine; worldview; Mayan calendar; ajq’ij or day-keeper; local co-authorship.
