Abstract

SANCHEZ MARTINEZ, Luvia Magdalena; PARRA VAZQUEZ, Manuel Roberto  and  ZAMORA LOMELI, Carla Beatriz. The dispute over the Community Government in Chilon, Chiapas. Cuicuilco. Rev. cienc. antropol. [online]. 2022, vol.29, n.84, pp.39-58.  Epub Feb 10, 2023. ISSN 2448-8488.

This article analyzes the complexity and the conflict that prevails in the dispute over the Community Government in Chilon, Chiapas. It is argued that, in addition to exogenous factors, the lack of specificity of the regional proposal is due to an internal dynamic in which intra-ethnic conflicts have been exacerbated. These conflicts can be observed from two scales: 1) schisms between sympathizers and non-sympathizers of the autonomous project, and 2) schisms between the group of applicants for the Community Government. This complexity can be explained with Gregory Bateson’s schismogenesis approach. The methodological strategy used for this study relies in a qualitative and reflective perspective that considers the actors’ discourse and the positions of the parties to the dispute, that show how the common objective is blurred, but which, at the same time, provide an impetus to evaluate and move forward in the process.

Keywords : Conflict; schismogenesis; community government; Chilon.
