Abstract

MARQUEZ LORENZO, Emmanuel  and  RAMIREZ CASTILLA, Gustavo Alberto. The use of asphalt among the ancient inhabitants of the archaeological site Chak Pet in Altamira, Tamaulipas. Cuicuilco. Rev. cienc. antropol. [online]. 2020, vol.27, n.79, pp.275-298.  Epub May 21, 2021. ISSN 2448-8488.

The analysis of archaeological materials associated with asphalt in the pre-Hispanic sites of Mesoamerica is practically ignored in recent studies, despite the fact that it had a variety of applications in the daily life of ancient societies. The purpose of this work is to show the reader the results of the analysis of ceramic fragments, with chapopote (asphalt) remains recovered from the Chak Pet archaeological site, in Altamira, Tamaulipas (Mexico), during the 2015-2016 field season. The said investigation is the result of a meticulous analysis carried out in the laboratory, requiring detailed observation of the materials through the use of an electron microscope, thus making it possible to determine, and ensure, that the identified material was, in fact, asphalt and not any other substance. From this analysis, specific deductions are shown as a result of the research work.
