Abstract

MIRANDA JUAREZ, Vanessa. Beautifying the glorious past: the analysis of a discourse in the interpretation of a national identity. Cuicuilco. Rev. cienc. antropol. [online]. 2017, vol.24, n.70, pp.47-77. ISSN 2448-8488.

This paper presents an analysis of the power of language in the production and reproduction of a hegemonic national discourse by way of the analysis of a public discourse given by an 11-year-old Nahua indigenous girl, a second-generation migrant. This discourse refers to a glorious cultural past, the pre-Hispanic heritage is enriched to enhance a unique and homogeneous national identity that is far from recognizing cultural and linguistic diversity and, on the contrary, actually hides the true social and political factors that are behind the notions of inclusion/exclusion among the mestizo and indigenous population in Mexico.

Keywords : Language; racism; inclusion; exclusion; representation.
