Abstract

CAMPOS VAZQUEZ, Raymundo M.  and  MELENDEZ MARTINEZ, Álvaro. Una estimación semiparamétrica de las pautas de consumo e ingreso a lo largo del ciclo de vida para México. El trimestre econ [online]. 2013, vol.80, n.320, pp.805-840. ISSN 2448-718X.

This article estimates semiparametrically life cycle profiles of consumption and income in Mexico during the last 26 years. Consumption expenditures are divided in durable and nondurable goods for household heads according to different characteristics: education or urban/rural status. The findings indicate that consumption shows an inverted-U shape over the life cycle in opposition to traditional models of consumption. This inverted-U shape pattern cannot be explained by changes in the composition of the household nor for complementarities of consumption with household labor supply during the life cycle. In addition, we find that households in Mexico consume a relatively low proportion in durable goods in comparison with other developed countries. The results suggest that credit constraints are important for Mexican households.

Keywords : consumo; ciclo de vida; restricciones de crédito; semiparamétrico; México.
