Abstract

CAMARENA CASTELLANOS, Ricardo. A gift in good faith from Ermilo Abreu Gómez to Dorothy Schons: the manuscript copy of fe de erratas y erratas de fe, by Pedro de Avendaño. Nueva rev. filol. hisp. [online]. 2018, vol.66, n.1, pp.123-151. ISSN 2448-6558.  https://doi.org/10.24201/nrfh.v66i1.3395.

This paper addresses the work Fe de erratas y Erratas de fe by the authors Pedro de Avendaño, Francisco Xavier Palavicino and Pedro Muñoz de Castro, who satirized the worthless preaching of the Biscayan archdeacon Diego de Zuazo Coscojales in the Mexico City Metropolitan Cathedral at the beginning of the 18th Century. This contentious text showcased the sense of intellectual independence of Mexico in its relationship to Spain. We contend that Avendaño, “The Mexican Vieira”, has played a significant role in Novo-Hispanic satirical and theological thinking, with his bold and audacious preaching, in his role as a correspondent of Sor Juana, Manuel Fernández de Santa Cruz, and others, and also with his two brief inquisitorial files because of the Fe de erratas…

Keywords : Pedro de Avendaño, Fe de erratas; Diego de Zuazo Coscojales; Inquisition; Novo-Hispanic satire.
