Abstract

MACHADO MENDOZA, Dodany  and  PEREZ PEREZ, Valia. Estimation of sex by epiphysis of the radius in a sample of Cubans. An. antropol. [online]. 2022, vol.56, n.2, pp.65-71.  Epub Aug 14, 2023. ISSN 2448-6221.  https://doi.org/10.22201/iia.24486221e.2022.79924.

The estimation of sex from fragmented long bones is part of the daily work of forensic anthropologists around the world. The objective of this work is to obtain discriminant functions that achieve the estimation of sex from fragmented radius with a high degree of reliability. The sample consisted of 156 radius (89 male and 67 female) belonging to Cuban adults (20 to 64 years old) of Hispanic descent. Seven measurements were taken per bone (4 proximal and 3 distal). It was used for the SPSS v 20 analysis, applying the Student t test to compare the male and female means and the discriminant analysis to obtain the functions. The results show statistically significant differences between both sexes for all the measurements performed (p <0.001). 18 discriminant functions were elaborated, whose percentages of correct prediction for the estimation of sex ranged between 88.1% and 97.1%, the functions for the distal region and combining both regions show more than 95% of correct prediction. It was concluded that the calculated functions can be useful for estimating sex from fragmented radius, in the forensic field, for populations of Hispanic descent.
