Abstract

NAVARRETE CACERES, Carlos. Chinkultic. Circulation within an archaeological site on the Eastern Highlands of Chiapas, Mexico. An. antropol. [online]. 2020, vol.54, n.2, pp.19-33.  Epub Nov 29, 2021. ISSN 2448-6221.  https://doi.org/10.22201/iia.24486221e.2020.2.70450.

One of the topics landscape archaeology deals with the circulation of people when transiting through large centers, mainly during massive civic and religious ceremonies. This essay proposes a circuit through the different spaces and architectural settings that conform Chinkultic, by relating the representations on stelae and their distribution, the possible function of buildings and the symbolic orientation established between a scenic ensemble, a pyramid at the top of a hill and a water-filled cenote.

Keywords : Maya archaeology; architecture; circulation; religion; symbolism.
