Abstract

HERNANDEZ, Silvia. Heritage as an ideology and as an historical device for objectifying memory: theoretical contributions for the study of patrimonialization processes. Cultura representaciones soc [online]. 2021, vol.15, n.30, 00003.  Epub Feb 13, 2023. ISSN 2007-8110.

This article develops theoretical contributions derived from an empirical study about the patrimonialization of a neighborhood in the city of Buenos Aires, Argentina. Based on a theoretical methodological approach which connects communication studies and contributions from a critical urban sociology, this conceptualization of heritage links memory, culture and urban change at the juncture of late capitalism. In the first place, from a relational and anti-essentialist perspective, the article emphasizes on the primacy of the patrimonialization process over its effect, the heritage. Then, heritage is defined as an ideological response to the transformation of contemporary ways of inhabiting the city and as a historical discursive device for objectifying memory. Finally, some tensions around the category of heritage in the neo-liberal situation are reviewed.

Keywords : Heritage; ideology; urban change; urban memory; neoliberalismo.
