Abstract

ZALPA RAMIREZ, Genaro  and  VELEZ GUZMAN, Marisol. To dress up in Aguascalientes: structure and Agency in everyday life. Cultura representaciones soc [online]. 2020, vol.15, n.29, pp.303-330.  Epub Mar 07, 2022. ISSN 2007-8110.

This article analyzes an ordinary daily activity: getting dressed. Following the guidelines of Michel de Certeau in his texts on the invention of everyday life, eight women and five men were interviewed about how they choose what to wear, that is, the decision acts de Certeau calls micro-liberties. The analysis is carried out taking de Certeau’s theoretical criticism of Pierre Bourdieu for his alleged determinism. We maintain that, in order to understand this criticism, it is necessary to take into account the year of publication of Michel de Certeau’s texts (1980) and the texts published by Bourdieu up to that same year, since from that year onwards, one can rather speak of a convergence of the theoretical perspectives of the two social scientists. It is in the context of this dialogue that our empirical research acquires its sociological meaning.

Keywords : getting dressed; everyday life; de Certeau; Bourdieu; determination/freedom.
