Abstract

KLEIN, Alejandro. The need for taking care of those who used to need being cared for by others: Old age and family demographic trends. Cultura representaciones soc [online]. 2015, vol.10, n.19, pp.128-153. ISSN 2007-8110.

This paper reviews different changes that have been produced at the demographic and family level and how they have influenced the change of roles of grandparents. As the title suggests, they are no longer being cared for by others, instead they have become the caretakers of their grandchildren, no matter if they are young children or teenagers. Regarding the youngsters some opinions and perspectives about the family and especially the way they perceive their grandparents are pointed out. This dual approach that reviews the specialized literature and presents an analysis of a case study aims to exhibit the complexity of the subject matter, traversed by multiple socio-economic, relational and emotional variables.

Keywords : old age; familial tendencies; generational.
