Abstract

CARDONA GOMEZ, Erik Roberto  and  BARCENA JUAREZ, Sergio Arturo. Identity and Political Representation. Contemporary Reflections. En-clav. pen [online]. 2015, vol.9, n.17, pp.69-86. ISSN 2594-1100.

Political representation is an institutionalized dialogue that seeks to reveal the citizen's interests in public decision making arenas. However, in its classical notion, representation excludes the possibility of deliberation as well as the articulation of demands of the many cultural clusters that define contemporary communities. This asymmetry, inherent to the original notion of the concept, manifests itself in a deficit within the democratic exercise in so far that it inhibits the active deliberation of the different bodies that make up society. This paper stresses the relevance of identity as a point of departure for conceptualizing an effective political representation, based on the principles of recognition, redistribution and deliberation.

Keywords : Justice; Identity; Representation; Multiculturalism; Deliberation.
