Abstract

SALGADO-MIRANDA, Celene  and  SORIANO-VARGAS, Edgardo. Identification of Eimeria columbarum in the Rock Pigeon (Columba livia) from Toluca City, Mexico. Huitzil [online]. 2021, vol.22, n.2, e619.  Epub Oct 24, 2022. ISSN 1870-7459.  https://doi.org/10.28947/hrmo.2021.22.2.548.

The Rock Pigeon (Columba livia) was initially introduced to North America from Europe in XVII century, along with its diseases. Infections by parasites of the genera Eimeria and Isospora affect the intestinal tract and produce enteric disease in wild and domestic birds. Worldwide, at least 5 Eimeria spp. have been described in the domestic pigeon. Here we provide the first description of E. columbarum sporulated oocysts in faecal samples of domestic pigeons from Toluca City, Mexico.

Keywords : Columba livia; Rock Pigeon; Eimeria columbarum; Toluca; Mexico.
