Abstract

TINOCO-TELLEZ, Luis; MARIN Y SANTILLAN, Ernesto; MURGUIA-PEREZ, Mario  and  DOMINGUEZ-CARRILLO, Luis Gerardo. Solid pseudopapillary pancreatic tumor. Acta méd. Grupo Ángeles [online]. 2017, vol.15, n.1, pp.52-56. ISSN 1870-7203.

Background:

A solid pseudopapillary pancreatic tumor is an epithelial tumor of low malignancy that primarily affects young women; it represents ~1-2% of all pancreatic neoplasms. Its presentation in males is extraordinary.

Clinical case:

A 23-year-old male with six months’ symptomatology with early satiety, postprandial abdominal distension, and occasional colic pain. In the physical examination, an abdominal mass was located in the mesogastrium; it was confirmed with ultrasound and tomography, dependent on the pancreas. He underwent surgery and was diagnosed as a solid pseudopapillary tumor. The patient presented diabetes mellitus as a complication; he was treated by an endocrinologist, without other morbidities.

Conclusions:

Solid pseudopapillary tumor of the pancreas is a rare neoplasm. It is extraordinary in males. Clinical manifestations include abdominal pain, sensation of plenitude or early satiety, abdominal mass, nausea and vomiting, but the patient may be asymptomatic. Computerized axial tomography is the main diagnostic method, where a large encapsulated heterogeneous mass can be observed. Diagnosis is established through biopsy; surgery is the best treatment, with 97% of survival at five years.
