Abstract

AGUIRRE SALVADOR, Rodolfo. The conformation of the archiepiscopal curia of Mexico: continuity and rupture, 1682-1747. Tzintzun. Rev. estud. históricos [online]. 2018, n.68, pp.7-38.  Epub Mar 18, 2020. ISSN 2007-963X.

This work has two central objectives. The first is to explain how the archbishops of Mexico formed the team of clerics who assisted them in the governance of their jurisdictions: provisors, judges and tax promoters, analyzing how the university’s lawyers prepared and integrated themselves into the curia, as well as as the factors that intervened in that process. The second objective is to study the period 1682-1747, in which it is possible to point out important changes. From 1682 to 1730 it is possible to notice a great creole influence in the archbishopric of Mexico, but in the fourth decade Archbishop Vizarron gave preference to Iberian clerics, causing the anger of the local clergy.

Keywords : archbishopric of Mexico; curia; ecclesiastical courts; local clergy; archbishops.
