Abstract

GARCIA MORENO, Rafael  and  ALVAREZ BEJAR, Alejandro Rogelio. Mexico’s Automobile Sector and the North American Region. Results and Perspectives of the Greater Integration Negotiated in the USMCA. Norteamérica [online]. 2023, vol.18, n.1, pp.145-167.  Epub Jan 12, 2024. ISSN 2448-7228.  https://doi.org/10.22201/cisan.24487228e.2023.1.508.

Almost two years after the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) came into effect, the authors present an analysis of Mexico’s auto industry as well as the conditions of its integration into the North American region. First, they study the basic elements that explain the evolution of the industry, whose origins can be found in almost a century of history. Then, they evaluate the conditions that gave rise to the renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), a process that culminated in the signing of the USMCA. They continue, explaining the stipulations about the determination of the regional origin of vehicles manufactured in North America, and conclude with their perspectives for the sector.

Keywords : F13; F14; F16; L62; USMCA; automobile sector; value of regional content; value of labor content.
