Abstract

DWORAK, Fernando. In favor of negative campaigning: A plea for Mexico. Rev. IUS [online]. 2012, vol.6, n.30, pp.118-135. ISSN 1870-2147.

It shall be understood as "negative campaign" which rather than deal with remarking the virtues of a candidate, aims to highlight the shortcomings of the adversary. In this case, a candidate does not enhance their virtues but the negative points of the opponent. This is undermining the reputation of a candidate or political choice, through evoking images and arguments that degrade the perception of voters forming of their rival. Beyond any ethical evaluation are important tools for political debate. The aim of this essay is to present the usefulness of this remedy, and its regulation and why it has been outlawed in Mexico. In the end it will be argued that the fundamental problem is the lack of accountability, it makes the political parties less competitive and highly vulnerable to attack tactics.

Keywords : Negative campaigns; elections; elections inauthentic; Mexico; Mexican electoral system; electoral reform; democracy; State; electoral law.
