Abstract

CARPIO OVANDO, Perla Shiomara Del. Psychosocial risk factors of artisanal amber mining in Simojovel, Chiapas. Culturales [online]. 2023, vol.11, e702.  Epub Apr 17, 2023. ISSN 2448-539X.  https://doi.org/10.22234/recu.20231101.e702.

This article aims to identify and analyze psychosocial risk factors of artisanal amber mining carried out by the Tsotsil population of Simojovel, Chiapas, Mexico. This is a qualitative ethnographic research study that made use of semi structured interviews, field notes and participant observations. The participants were former miners, active miners, female and male artisans, consumers and employees from cultural institutions. The results indicate that the psychosocial risk factors of artisanal mining are associated with working conditions, work informalities, multiple activities and aspects related to the ethnic origin, gender and group affiliation of those who participate in mining work. It is concluded that it is necessary to generate strategic alliances, specific proposals and actions that aim to the construction of a public policy that considers the formalization of artisanal mining, access to technology, environmental care and the improvement of living, working and health conditions of the population dedicated to mining.

Keywords : psychosocial factors; artisanal mining; Chiapas; miners.
