Abstract

MARTINEZ-NUNEZ, Juan Manuel et al. Economic burden study of anovulation-related female infertility in a Mexican public hospital: A pilot study. Rev. mex. cienc. farm [online]. 2012, vol.43, n.2, pp.66-72. ISSN 1870-0195.

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the total costs of treating female infertility due to anovulation in patients attending the Gynecology and Obstetrics Hospital "La Raza". A cross-sectional and observational study was conducted. Thirty women older than 18 years with infertility due to anovulation were included; they were treated with clomiphene citrate or anastrozole. The micro-costing process, the analysis of medical records and a 20-item questionnaire application were used to estimate treatment costs. The total costs over six months for the 25 women treated with clomiphene citrate were $733,658.35, and the total costs for the five women treated with anastrozole were $282,278.05. The economic burden of female infertility due to anovulation in the studied population was high.

Keywords : female infertility; cost of illness; clomiphene citrate; anastrozole.
