Abstract

SCALERCIO, Mauro. “From a dead corner of history.” Southern issues and thoughts. Andamios [online]. 2019, vol.16, n.41, pp.309-330.  Epub May 20, 2020. ISSN 2594-1917.  https://doi.org/10.29092/uacm.v16i41.727.

This essay defines the fundamental features of a “southern thought” based historically on the peculiar context of Southern Italy, and philosophically on Giambattista Vico’s works. Beginning with quote from Gramsci, according to whom Vico wrote from a “little, dead corner of history”, I read the history of southern questions and thought not in terms of “backwardness” but as the possibility to define a thought counter-hegemonic to the Canon of Western Thought, and I indicate Vincenzo Cuoco, Gramsci, Ernesto de Martino as a basis for it.

Keywords : Southern Question; modernity; Giambattista Vico; Antonio Gramsci.
