This article documents the different meanings thatgender violence has for women (whether victims of abuse or not) who live in a community of returned exiles in northern Guatemala, and who had been organized in "Mama Maquín". We have sought to show the community norms and prescriptions that can constitute reasons for the lack of reported incidents. We consider that the acceptance of abuse by the victims themselves is an obstacle to the disappearance of gender violence in society.
