Abstract

FREIDENBERG, Flavia. Left vs. Right. Ideological Polarization and Political Competitiveness in the Ecuadorean Party System. Polít. gob [online]. 2006, vol.13, n.2, pp.237-278. ISSN 1665-2037.

This paper identifies the ideological positions of Ecuadorean deputies in the last three legislatures (1996-1998, 1998-2002 y 2003-2006) and explores the ways in which these shape the party system. The data reveal that ideological differences exist and that, by Latin American standards, there is a high level of polarization, both of which have contributed to the governance difficulties in Ecuador. The paper draws upon the Élites Parlamentarias en América Latina, project financed by the Instituto Interuniversitario de Iberoamérica at the University of Salamanca.

Keywords : left; right; members of parliament; attitudes; parties; Ecuador.
