Abstract

MADRIGAL LEON, Diurkis Yarenis. Aging in rural spaces. Expressions of social vulnerability in community settings in eastern Cuba. Pap. poblac [online]. 2022, vol.28, n.113, pp.97-124.  Epub Aug 21, 2023. ISSN 2448-7147.  https://doi.org/10.22185/24487147.2022.113.21.

International statistics show the accelerated rate of population aging; Cuba is inserted in these data with disturbing records; according to projections for 2030, people aged 60 and over will comprise more than 30 percent of the population. The article focuses on the realities of life of the elderly, prone to situations of social vulnerability in complex conditions, typical of rural environments. It is analyzed to what extent there are related relationships that lead to vulnerability -in essence-when difficult problems coincide in sensitive groups, residents of adverse spaces. The results make visible a double conditionality of factors, attached to the quality of community life and depending on the personal and family conditions of the elderly, giving rise to forms of inequality, disadvantages, helplessness and lack of protection, among other expressions of social vulnerability addressed according to the living space.

Keywords : Aging; older adults; social vulnerability; rural spaces; Granma province.
