Abstract

LEVEAU, Carlos M.. Urbanization y counter-urbanization in Argentina: an analysis for the system of settlements for 1980-1991. Pap. poblac [online]. 2011, vol.17, n.68, pp.147-159. ISSN 2448-7147.

Using correlation tests between 1980 settlement size and population growth, urbanization and counter-urbanization patterns were analyzed for the 1980-1991 inter-census period. At national level an urbanization pattern was recorded, with a significant positive correlation between settlement size and population growth. At provincial level, seven provinces recorded significant positive correlations; meanwhile, Misiones Province recorded a significant negative correlation. When the 1980's correlations coefficients were compared with those of 1991-2001 inter-census period, a significant positive correlation was recorded. In this way, 1980 correlations coefficients partly predicted next decade patterns. In most of the largest agglomerations, the population growth of minor peri-urban localities was greater than that recorded in minor interior localities.

Keywords : urbanization; counter-urbanization; minor localities; Argentina.
