Abstract

NEHRING, Daniel. Reflections on cultural constructions of gender relationships in Mexico. Pap. poblac [online]. 2005, vol.11, n.45, pp.221-245. ISSN 2448-7147.

The present essay explores cultural constructions of gender relationships in Mexico. Social researchers have in recent years increasingly focused on analyzing and explaining the notable transformations of gender relationships since the 1970s. However, the majority of the research has been conducted with a predominantly socio-economic or socio-demographic approach, as well as sometimes a political one. This text, wants to contribute to closing these gaps. Based on a brief review of the existing academic literature, it is argued that the constitution of gender relations in Mexico should be understood in terms of long-term, multi-stage, and multi-level processes of cultural globalization, hybridization, and the mixing and interpenetration of heterogeneous cultural elements from diverse internal and external sources.

Keywords : gender relationships; cultural construction; gender; Mexico.
