Abstract

CANALES, Alejandro I.. Theoretic challenges of demography in the contemporary society. Pap. poblac [online]. 2004, vol.10, n.40, pp.47-69. ISSN 2448-7147.

Since Malthus, the principle of population was sustained on the relatinshippopulation development. Both, the origin of this question and the different answers provided emerged from the discursive array of modernity. In the frame of the meta-discourses of modernity, the challenge of demography does not refer as much to reinvestment of theories, giving new answers to old questions, as to the questioning of the principle that gave origin to the demographic topic in the centre of modern society. In this sense, the thesis supported in this article is that the demographic discourse in post-modern society ahould arise from criticism of the prevalent population's concept in the discourse of modernity.

Keywords : demography; question of the post-modernity; population theory.
