Abstract

WOLFS, José-Luis; NUNEZ-MOSCOSO, Javier; VELASQUEZ-SEMPER, Francisco  and  WILKIN, Sara. Students' Secular and Nonsecular Conceptions of Science: Implications for Teaching Training. RMIE [online]. 2022, vol.27, n.95, pp.1165-1192.  Epub Jan 30, 2023. ISSN 1405-6666.

This article identifies conceptions of science (secular/nonsecular) among secondary students, in order to obtain knowledge about their beliefs and consider the training of science teachers. To this end, the concept of secularization was employed and implemented in a survey of students in sixteen nations. The results reveal: a) three blocks of nations and/or religious groups with various levels of secularization, which present scenarios of professional practice; and b) a shared epistemological obstacle among students: a confusion between science and religion. Ideas for teacher training are suggested, such as studying the role of science teachers and the educational institution, integrating knowledge of student beliefs, and reflecting on the purposes, limits, and historical/cultural development of science.

Keywords : student beliefs; science; religion; teacher training; comparative analysis; science teaching.
