Abstract

LEON-MOJARRO, Benjamín de; PRADO-HERNANDEZ, J. Víctor; VERDIER, Jean  and  FUENTES-RUIZ, Carlos. Numerical simulation of control structures movement in irrigation canals. Agrociencia [online]. 2007, vol.41, n.1, pp.75-86. ISSN 2521-9766.

To represent control structures movement in irrigation canals with mathematical modeling, three simulation procedures of structure manipulation that control discharge and water depth were analized. These procedures were simulated with a model of unsteady flow in canals that solves the Saint-Venant equations using an implicit scheme of finite differences. These procedures modify storage and input from mesh adjacent to the control structure, which could be a gate, a spillway, a sluice or a delivery canal, among others. With these modifications it is possible to simulate progressive and instantaneous maneuvering of the control structures. It was found that if the variable to be regulated is the water depth, it is recommended that instantaneous maneuvering or progressive maneuvering be executed with restart of discharge rate, but if the variable to be regulated is head flow, it is preferable to use progressive maneuvering with restart of water depth.

Keywords : Boundary conditions; gate operation; unsteady flow.
