Abstract

IZCARA-PALACIOS, Simón Pedro. Sex Trafficking in Mexico: Perpetrators’ Profile. Convergencia [online]. 2023, vol.30, e20701.  Epub Dec 08, 2023. ISSN 2448-5799.  https://doi.org/10.29101/crcs.v30i0.20701.

The aim of this article is to examine the profile of the perpetrators; it is based on detailed interviews with 75 migrant women victims of sex trafficking in Mexico. The results of this study present a masculinized profile. The perpetrators who lead trafficking networks are predominantly men, while female perpetrators generally take up secondary positions and in many cases are coerced. Women in leadership positions accounted for only 5% of all cases studied. Furthermore, the acts of migrant women in secondary positions were the result of a situation of trafficking. By contrast, the actions of autochthonous women in secondary positions appeared to be motivated for profit.

Keywords : migrant women; sex trafficking; perpetrators; organized crime; Mexico.
