This article pretends to show that religion and ethnicity had and still have a fundamental role in the build ing of Irak as a polity, emphasizing that its importance is being enhanced in the present war, constituting a very good example of the permanent task that national con struction implies, in which the nation is reformulated, adapted and changed according to history and the dominant sectors that determine it. Through a historical tracking of Irak’s development since its creation in 1920, the different political actors show their struggles to impose their legitimacy.
