Abstract

ROBERTS, Nicole. Añoranzas negras : la poesía negra uruguaya del siglo XX. Polít. cult. [online]. 2004, n.22, pp.183-195. ISSN 0188-7742.

This article offers a detailed study of Black Uruguayan poetry. It aims to highlight, and to analyze, the themes dealt with by five Uruguayan poets of the 20th century, whose output, while limited, is exceedingly rich in historical documentation and is of great literary value. The order followed is chronological, as the poems appear in the Antología de poetas negros uruguayos (1990). The aim is not to cover all the poetry (and much less the themes) written in the 20th century by Black Uruguayan poets, but rather to showcase the view of the poet’s world as revealed in their verses. Thus it aspires to offer merely a representative sample of the century.

Keywords : Black poetry; Uruguay; 20th century; humanity; Black communities.
