Drawing on the theory of mode in music, the author proposes, through ethnographic data, to conceptualize Yucatecan trova music as encorporated and delivered within established performance modes. These modes would be manifold conventions and patterns intelligible to the performers and well as to their audience, which make possible a shared understanding of the trova performances.
