Abstract

PADILLA Y SOTELO, Lilia Susana  and  JUAREZ GUTIERREZ, María del Carmen. The spatial dimension of population growth in Mexicali. Invest. Geog [online]. 2000, n.43, pp.88-104. ISSN 2448-7279.

The study focusses on the changes in population growth in Mexicali, which is currently facing a considerable territorial dynamism due to its development and environmental impact. The population process that took place in the beginning of the century is analyzed in its historical dimension. Afterwards the population transformations that have occurred to date are discussed. Finally, the relationship between population growth and spatial growth is interpreted in terms of its political-administrative importance as the capital city of the Baja California State, and as a result of its location at the border with the United States of America. The applied methodology was the general model of density gradient, that allows to determine basic dimensions of the social space and its intra-urban variations.

Keywords : Population; growth; degree of urbanization.
