Abstract

GARCIA DE FUENTES, Ana  and  MORALES, Josefina. Dinámica regional de Yucatán 1980-2000. Invest. Geog [online]. 2000, n.42, pp.157-172. ISSN 2448-7279.

Amidst a long structural crisis, globalization has promoted deep regional transformations in Yucatan that have moved the axis of its economic production, which during the 20th Century rested exclusively in the production of henequén for export. Three axes of the neoliberal policy are applied in the region: privatization of public businesses, opening to foreign investment, and reorientation of production toward the external market. These axes affect the whole economic structure of the region, while, at the same time, there is a consolidation in the re-accommodation of regional capitals in line with the re-composition that is taking place within capitals at a national level. The new axes of regional dynamics, namely swine raising, contract manufacturing industry, and the renovation of the communications and transportation infrastructure, modify the territorial processes in Yucatan, imprinting new features to the international insertion of this border zone.

Keywords : Globalization and region; Yucatán; Mexico.
