This document reviews the historical changes of the territorial division in the State of Oaxaca. with an emphasis in those that occurred at a municipal level. The information contained in several territorial division maps developed by government agencies and research centers is compared. An effort is made to relate the municipal division with information obtained through censuses since the end of the nineteenth century to date, and with environmental Information recently generated by INEGI. The methodology used by the author to obtain the municipal division map for the state of Oaxaca is described, emphasizing the importance of having accessible, reliable and easy-to-update digital information, that is necessary for planning.
