Abstract

VERGARA ERICES, Luis Alejandro. Neoliberal globalization and changes in a small town: The case of Angol, Chile. Estud. soc [online]. 2015, vol.23, n.46, pp.10-32. ISSN 0188-4557.

This paper seeks to analyze the effects and urban transformations that occurred during the period of globalization in the small town of Angol. This city is located in the Araucania Region, Chile. The results show that the neoliberal globalization has modernized agriculture; forest plantations expanded and strengthened the service sector of the commune giving continuity to processes of rural-urban migration. While the older sectors of the city are experiencing urban renewal, those outlying districts have expanded spatial and demographic thanks to the construction of social housing, an issue which has resulted in increased small-scale segregation without urban fragmentation, or functional disintegration due to the trend towards policentralización triggered by neoliberal globalization.

Keywords : neoliberalism; small towns; urban development; segregation; Angol; Araucanía.
