Abstract
VILLAGOMEZ ORNELAS, Paloma. Mothering while feeding: Food work and inequalities in low-income urban sectors. Rev. Mex. Sociol [online]. 2023, vol.85, n.3, pp.697-722. Epub Sep 01, 2023. ISSN 2594-0651. https://doi.org/10.22201/iis.01882503p.2023.3.60777.
This study analyzes how maternal care is expressed through the work of feeding the family. Through a qualitative approach carried out in socioeconomically precarious urban contexts, the research identifies the criteria, norms or values that structure such work; how its organization varies according to access to resources, and the effect of these variations on the production of symbolic distinctions between moral representations of good and bad motherhood. Even in precarious environments, unequal access to resources not only produces different food care practices, but also differences in how mothers themselves assess their own performance.
Keywords : motherhood; feeding work; inequalities; gender; poverty.
