Abstract

CASTRO-COLINA, Libertad. Biodiversity of seeds that are common and inseparable from their comunalidad. Rev. Mex. Sociol [online]. 2022, vol.84, n.3, pp.625-652.  Epub Aug 01, 2022. ISSN 2594-0651.  https://doi.org/10.22201/iis.01882503p.2022.3.60320.

Seed diversity, its comunalidad (campesinos), and its local practices (milpa and ejido) are commons that can be influenced by no local contexts (science and regulation). Based on the eight principles of design for common institutions suggested by Elinor Ostrom, this study concluded that science with agroecological perspectives supports the milpa’s ancestral wisdom, while science focused on the Green Revolution does not. Moreover, most of the legislation analyzed is seen as an obstacle to the commons’ stability.

Keywords : commons; native seeds; milpa; local institutions.
