Abstract

REYES CHAVEZ, Johan David. First record of Draconopteris draconoptera (Tectariaceae) for the flora of Honduras. Act. Bot. Mex [online]. 2018, n.123, pp.193-199. ISSN 2448-7589.  https://doi.org/10.21829/abm123.2018.1283.

Background and Aims:

In 1996, the pteridophytes in Honduras were represented by 109 genera and 651 species. However, although there is no recent catalog that reflects the current diversity of this group, new records and species have been discovered in Honduran territory. In order to increase the knowledge of the previously mentioned group, the first record of Draconopteris draconoptera for the flora of Honduras is presented.

Methods:

As part of floristic inventories in archaeological sites within the nucleus of the Rio Plátano Man and Biosphere Reserve (RHBRP), several plant specimens were collected, among them a previously unreported species, which was identified by the specialist R. C. Moran and confirmed using taxonomic keys.

Key results:

The fern found in the RHBRP, Draconopteris draconoptera, represents a new record of a monospecific genus for the flora of Honduras, expanding northwards its known distribution.

Conclusions:

The need to continue researching and updating the catalog of pteridophytes of Honduras is observed, based on recent taxonomic changes and the discovery of new species and records in Honduran territory since its last update.

Keywords : ferns; floristic inventory; monospecific genus; Polypodiales; pteridophytes; Rio Plátano.
