Abstract

Linear semi-empirical models, also known as linear kernel-driven models, have been used with some success to extract biophysical parameters of the vegetation from satellite imagery. They are based on assumptions difficult to corroborate and their calibration requires assuming that conditions of the soil-vegetation-atmosphere system are homogeneous. A BRDF model without this constraint is evaluated in this study by simulating the scattering process of incoming solar radiation according to different land cover configurations. Data were generated through the implementation of four linear kernel-driven models. The response of the model proposed for each scenario was assessed by means of a single linear regression, obtaining determination coefficient values above 0.98. Our results suggest that is possible to use the model evaluated on those applications where linear semi- empirical models are currently used.
