Abstract

This work was carried out in the CENID RASPA INIFAP experimental station in Gómez Palacio, Durango, Mexico. It was focused on the nutrient extraction of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (N, P, and K) by jalapeño pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) and its effects on green fruit production, growing under 12 treatments, which resulted from a factorial design 2 x 6. Studied factors were 2 irrigation water regimes: 20 - 60 and 30 - 70% class A pan evaporation applied in two growing stages of jalapeño pepper and six plastic mulch treatments: black, red, white, blue, green and without plastic mulch. All treatments were irrigated with a drip-tape system. A completely randomized experimental design with 3 replications was used. The results indicated that the highest amount of N extracted was 3.5 g plant-1; this occurred under black plastic mulch and 83 cm water. The greatest P extraction (0.54 g plant-1) occurred when using red plastic and 83 cm water. Similarly, the highest extraction of K (6 g plant-1) also took place under red plastic and 83 cm water. The lowest nutrient extraction was displayed by the treatments growing without plastic mulch and 68.5 cm water consumption. The increase in soil temperatures up to 6 °C generated by plastic mulches favored higher nutriment extraction, higher production of dry matter and higher yield of green fruit.
