Abstract

PEREZ NILA, Karla Maribel. Representations of Maternity and Paternity in Xichú, Guanajuato. Impertinent Dichotomies or Guidelines for Action?. Sociológica (Méx.) [online]. 2016, vol.31, n.88, pp.235-267. ISSN 2007-8358.

The author reflects on how the experience of sexuality, work, and forms of conjugal unions runs through the representations of paternity and maternity in the form of practices and discourses between men and women over people's lifespans. Masculinity and femininity are constantly seen as being tested, and sexuality is experienced as a risk, since the nature of gender is ambiguous and contradictory. Creative alternatives, as well as conflicts and negotiations, have arisen in the face of the normativity expressed in family, parental, and work ideals that cannot always be adhered to.

Keywords : paternity; maternity; gender; families; conflicts and negotiations; dichotomies; social construction; Xic-hú; Guanajuato.
