Abstract

QUIROZ TREJO, José Othón. Arte, sociedad y sociología. Sociológica (Méx.) [online]. 2009, vol.24, n.71, pp.89-121. ISSN 2007-8358.

This is a historical-sociological analysis of the relationship among art, society, and sociology. It begins with the French Revolution and ends today. The journey allows the reader to see what the founders of the discipline considered the social function of art; the emergence of artistic avant-gardes; the rise and decline of socialist art; the emergence of the mass society, the cultural industry, and mass culture; the degradation of modern art and the birth of contemporary art. These are all phenomena that generate social processes of aestheticization, of the reunification of aesthetics, ethics, and the erotic, and aesthetic-sociological reflexivity.

Keywords : Art and society; social aestheticization; aesthetic reflexivity; cultural industry; artistic and political vanguards; de-sublimation; art and sociology.
