Abstract

HERNANDEZ-MARTINEZ, J et al. Private profitability of swine farms in the South of the State of Mexico. Universidad y ciencia [online]. 2008, vol.24, n.2, pp.117-124. ISSN 0186-2979.

Private profitability and the efficiency of private costs are competitiveness indicators of swine farms. This study was carried out in the South of the State of Mexico in 2006, and it was based on information provided by sixty smallholders, two semi-technified farms and one technified farm. The Policy Analysis Matrix (PAM) method was used. This method consists of a series of matrices of technical coefficients and input and product prices, and produced a private budget matrix. The three productive systems presented a positive profitability with private prices that varied from 11 to 13%. The private cost relationships varied between 0.53 and 0.58 that suggests a high competitiveness. It was concluded that for 2006 the production of swine in these systems made it possible to pay the market value of internal factors, including the rate of normal capital return, and that the productive activity was revenue-yielding considering the prices that were paid and received.

Keywords : competitiveness; swine production; private cost relationship; private profitability.
