Abstract

HERRERA GUEVARA, Sebastián Porfirio. Between Crooks and Cops: Depictions of the Guadalajara Police in the Press (1879-1890). Secuencia [online]. 2022, n.113, e1889.  Epub May 30, 2022. ISSN 2395-8464.  https://doi.org/10.18234/secuencia.v0i113.1889.

This article provides an overview of the portrayal of the urban police of Guadalajara in the local press. It begins with a reflection on the depiction of rising crime rates in the city and the socioeconomic aspects that explained them. It then explores the claims of police inefficiency, their lack of numbers and the helplessness of inhabitants in the capital of Jalisco. The following section focuses on the descriptions of the police structure, the unsuitable working conditions, and the growing requests for a fundamental renovation of the institution through new regulations. The article concludes with a section that addresses these reflections at the individual level, including everyday coverage of police action, ranging from inefficiency and police abuse to isolated good deeds.
