Abstract

VAZQUEZ ROBLES, Julián. Federico Gamboa and Women: Sentimental Education a Autobiographies. Secuencia [online]. 2018, n.101, pp.76-106. ISSN 2395-8464.  https://doi.org/10.18234/secuencia.v0i101.1433.

Many years before the craze for exhibiting the self in virtual environments, writer Federico Gamboa did an emotional striptease at the tender age of 28, when he published his autobiography, Impresiones y recuerdos, in 1893. Much of his reasoning is based on his affective erotic bonding with various women. And these experiences, which are presented as part of a life full of ups and downs, create a universe of female characters, in which one can say that there is a deceptive plural, because these characters are in fact just one, reflecting Gamboa’s transition from young man to adult, in the stages of initiation, evolution and graduation. This self-referential text was written from the perspective of literary studies, with the aim of contributing to the study of masculinities, as well as that of personal papers and their value as documentary sources.

Keywords : Federico Gamboa; autobiography; memory; Mexican literature; personal papers.
