Based on bibliographic, archival, and field information sources, this article presents the experiences of the Grijalva River Commission (CRG) from the development of its functions and its relationship with national priorities as a historical legacy in terms of practices for water management in the basins between Chiapas and Tabasco. The article shows the transition of the CRG, from its creation in 1951, until its disintegration in 1987, time in which the intervention of the basin in the Mexican southeast was promoted within the framework of the Integral Plan of the Southeast or Regional Development. This experience shows that the political relationship of projects around water has historically had effects on their realization, as well as social and environmental impacts present in the management of current basins. Also that these present realities are the product of an institutional concert of sectoral plans rather than a uniform bureaucratic structure, as this Commission sometimes tends to be identified in the second half of the 20th century.
