Abstract

FREITAG, Vanessa  and  CARPIO OVANDO, Perla Shiomara del. Memories of an Artisanal Trade: a Study with Tonalteca Pottery-makers. Relac. Estud. hist. soc. [online]. 2016, vol.37, n.148bis, pp.243-274. ISSN 2448-7554.

In this article, our purpose is to reflect on some memoirs of the artisan trade related by Tonalteca potters, with the purpose of understanding how they come to learn their trade and the reasons to maintain this tradition, regardless of the many economic difficulties through discrimination, and little social recognition. For this matter, we carried out an ethnographic task in Tonalá, Jalisco where three Tonalteca traditional potters were interviewed. As it will be presented in this document, family memory plays an important role in the pass on of knowledge and everlastingness of ancient rooted activities, like this trade which is constituted as a cultural need and is an employment that enables earning money.

Keywords : Memories of craftsmen; handmade craft; practices and knowledge of the trade; Tonalteca crafts.
